When you have requested a trial of the software, you will receive an email with the details of your trial. To start the software installation, ensure that you are connected to the internet and click on the Start Your Trial button in the email. The MATLAB installer client will start.

If you do not already have a MathWorks account, you will be prompted to create one during the installation process.

If you are subscribed to our software maintenance service, you have access to the latest releases of MATLAB as they come out. To get the new version, you will need to ask your license administrator to download the files from the MathWorks website. Once you have the MATLAB Installer (or the ISO files), run the MATLAB installer to install the new version.

You can have multiple versions of the tools installed simultaneously. Each version is stored in a separate installation folder so your old models will not be overwritten.

Once you have upgraded to a newer version of MATLAB you will need to make sure your Proxy Settings are enabled. To do this you will need to access the computer Control Panel and navigate to Internet Options. From here follow the path outlined below:

Internet Options –> Connections –> LAN-Settings –> Advanced -> Exceptions (add localhost)

To log in to your MathWorks account, go to and log in with your user name and password by clicking on the Log In button at the top right of the screen.

Once logged-in, you can view and update your account details from the drop-down menu. The Profile tab allows you to edit your contact and login information. You cannot change your User ID once it is set. Under the My Account tab, you can view your licenses (as shown in the picture below). The Community Profile tab shows details of your contributions to MathWorks Answers, the File Exchange and Cody.

Clicking on a license will allow you to view and manage that license. Four tabs are shown (see picture below) to enable you to manage the licence.

The Manage Products tab allows administrators to remove and reassign products as well as download additional products.

The Manage Users tab allows the administrator to add and remove end users of the license.

The Install and Activate tab gives a step-by-step guide on how to install and activate the software. This tab also allows the administrator to deactivate licenses for users as well as generate license files for activation.

The Contact Administrator(s) tab lists the license administrators and their email addresses

Removing an old user:

  1. Deactivate all of the old user’s MATLAB installations.

Option 1: If you have access to the old user’s machine: On their laptops/ PCs, open up MATLAB and go to Help -> Licensing -> Deactivate Software. When prompted to deactivate all installations of MATLAB on that machine, click “OK”. You can reactivate MATLAB once you have assigned a new end user.

Option 2: If you do not have access to the old user’s machine: Deactivate all the old user’s MATLAB installations in the License Centre under the “Install and Activate” tab.

  1. Remove the old end-user from the license: In the License Centre (the place on the MathWorks website where you found your license number), go to the second tab, labelled “Manage Users” and click the “Remove User” button next to the old user’s name (you should be logged in to the MathWorks website).

Adding a new user:

  1. In the second tab (Manage Users), click the “Add User” button and add the new user details.
  2. Activate the MATLAB license on the laptop for the new user: connect the laptop to the internet, and run the activate_matlab.exe application. The executable is located in your MATLAB installation folder (the default folder is C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017a\bin\win64). The MATLAB Activation Wizard will launch and take you through the steps required to activate the license.
